Highway Coalition unveiled its second (in a series of
over 40) Interpretive Mural in DeKalb, Illinois. As you’re
driving west on the highway, it is on the corner of 7th
Street and Lincoln Highway. This mural depicts travelers
driving the highway though the old DeKalb arch which
was built by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce in the early
1920’s and was inscribed as follows: “DeKalb:
A Live Wire City 10,000 Strong”. This statement
alluded to the fact that barbed wire was invented in
DeKalb. The original arch was eventually demolished,
but will now live on in this colorful mural. |
As
the western anchor of the booming I-88 corridor, DeKalb
is
only a short 30 minute drive to the high growth cities of
Aurora
and Naperville, and only a little more than an hour away
from
both downtown Chicago and O’Hare International Airport.
Yet,
in spite of its proximity to the Chicago region, DeKalb remains
apart, maintaining its own unique character as a rapidly
growing
Northern Illinois University community with both urban and
rural roots. Many of its older neighborhoods have brick paved
streets and well-kept historic homes while the edge of the
city
bustles with new residential and commercial developments.
The people of DeKalb enjoy the benefits that come with the
proximity to an international city like Chicago and a major
state
university including: museums, theaters, music, sports, speakers,
libraries, recreational facilities and more.
